	All major paint and deck specialty companies manufacture a deck cleaner. These cleaners are designed to produce an acceptable surface condition to allow for a successful application and reasonable service life for their coatings
Suggestion: Because we really don't know where your new wood has been, what elements it has been exposed to or what little critters slept on it, give it a quick soap and water wash during or right after construction. After all, it's going to be your family that will be walking, eating, and or sleeping on it. If you are going to apply one of our finishes immediately, use the proper cleaner.

The same is true in this situation. The deck cleaners will help break down dirt, grease, and pollution. They are designed to remove the gray dead wood that a chlorine bleach will only lighten. So if you really want to save money, use the systems recommended by the coatings manufacturer.

There are many deck finishes available. The condition of your wood after it is cleaned will help determine which is best for you. Transparent is very clear, usually has a toner for UV protection, repels water and is easily removed . Translucent offers a richer color and a superior resin system. Semi- transparent has more color and color choices. Semi- solid hides more, should last the longest and will be more difficult to remove for a color change. Solid deck coatings are available from all our manufacturers and are special ordered. The life of your coating is generally determined by it's exposure to the sun and the condition of the surface it is applied to.

For wood in above average condition and cleans up well, we highly recommend the Sikkens SRD product.
One coat application almost looks like an interior finish. Dries flat. Great application properties.

SOLID COLOR DECKING STAINS: The following statements are the opinions of R&S Paint and not the opinions of our manufacturers. It has generally been our experience that when a solid coating is desired it is because the deck floor is either very old or in need of repair or replacement. Because of this type of situation, the chance of a successful and long lasting result is not very good. Proper surface prep using quality cleaners is critical and as is the case with the Benjamin Moore and Cabot's water based products, an oil primer manufactured by them needs to be used. Sikkens is oil based and is self priming. The appearance, texture, and durability of these products is fantastic. We think they are great for railing, furniture, accents. Our opinion concerns deck floors. No coating is permanent. The cracks in the wood will show. Dragging a grill or furniture will damage the surface. And like all wood surfaces, the finish can crack and peel. If these are non-issues and your level of expectations are reasonable, then we will be more than happy to supply them. They look great and allow for a wide choice of exterior decorating options.
